Tech tools are helping to improve reading fluency

Since the start of this school year, Liz Marbut has helped second grade students who struggled with reading use microphones and Audacity software to improve their reading fluency. Reading fluency is the ability to read accurately, at an appropriate pace, and with appropriate expression. It is important for students to develop reading fluency because it allows them to focus on the meaning of texts rather than expending all their efforts on decoding words.

The Audacity software allows students to record and listen to themselves read. Through listening to appropriate models, repeated reading, and listening to their own recordings, students have learned to recognize and strive to achieve fluent reading. The second graders who participate in these activities have shown a great deal of improvement.
